Nel Settecento napoletano: poesia alle falde del Vesuvio

L’estetica del pittoresco e il rovinismo tardo settecenteschi non sono i soli elementi che hanno contribuito all’instaurarsi del topos “vesuviano”. A interessare i poeti, lungo un secolo che vide il vulcano quasi sempre in attività, furono anche il dibattito scientifico sulle cause delle eruzioni e l’interrogarsi dei filosofi sulle leggi della natura che presiedevano a quei fenomeni. Il saggio si sofferma su vari autori, napoletani o operanti a Napoli in quegli anni, ricostruendo le reti, gli ambienti e i motivi culturali che ne orientarono gli atteggiamenti. La lettura dei testi evidenzia il costante colloquio intessuto dai letterati con gli scienziati e con i filosofi della natura, e studia le diverse forme con cui questo colloquio viene tradotto in versi. Gli autori presi in esame sono Giuseppe Luigi Pellegrini, Atanagio Cavalli, Luigi Serio, Antonio Di Gennaro, Aurelio Bertola e Michelangelo Cicconi.

In Eighteenth-Century Naples: Poetry in the Shade of Mount Vesuvius

The late eighteenth-century aesthetic ideal of the picturesque and the painting of ruins are not the only elements that have contributed to the establishment of the «Vesuvian» topos. The volcano was very active during all that century, and the poets developed an interest in the scientific debate on the causes of the eruptions and on the philosophical questioning about the laws of nature that presided over such phenomena. The essay focuses on various authors – Neapolitans or operating in Naples in those years – and reconstructs the connections, the environment and the cultural ground that guided their attitude. The analysis of the texts highlights the literati’s search for a constant interaction with scientists and philosophers of nature, and studies the different forms in which this dialogue is translated into verse. The examined authors are Giuseppe Luigi Pellegrini, Atanagio Cavalli, Luigi Serio, Antonio Di Gennaro, Aurelio Bertola and Michelangelo Cicconi.
