La traduzione e la sua influenza culturale

Alla molteplicità delle lingue umane corrisponde un’altrettanta molteplicità di divisioni del mondo, sia naturali sia culturali. La traduzione ha sempre permesso gli scambi fra culture e percezioni, favorendo influenze reciproche e spesso anche cambiamenti nelle lingue e nelle civiltà di arrivo. La traduzione è stata anche un mezzo di conservazione di saperi nello spazio e nel tempo, per esempio quando una cultura in declino ha perso memoria dei propri documenti per poi ritrovarli altrove trasportati e conservati in altre lingue. Fra i vari esempi di trasmissione e influenze culturali, la diffusione dell’Arcadia tramite le traduzioni ha portato a importanti effetti tematici, stilistici e linguistici nelle letterature dell’Europa centro-orientale del XVIII secolo. In particolare, viene analizzato quello che accade nella letteratura ungherese, in un momento importante di passaggio dall’uso letterario del latino alla lingua nazionale.

Translation and its cultural influence

The variety of human languages corresponds to an equal variety of worldviews, both natural and cultural. Translation has always allowed exchanges between different cultures and perceptions, facilitating mutual influences and often also changes in the languages and civilizations of arrival. Translation has also been a means of preserving knowledge in space and time, for example when a declining culture, after losing memory of its documents, finds them elsewhere, translated and preserved in other languages. Among the various examples of transmission and cultural influences, the spread of Arcadia through translations has led to important thematic, stylistic and linguistic effects in 18th century Central and Eastern European literatures. This essay focuses on what happens in Hungarian literature at an important moment of transition from the literary use of Latin to the national language.
