La nascita del galateo

Il contributo mira a mettere in luce lo stratificarsi nella scrittura del celebre trattatello di Giovanni Della Casa di filoni culturali diversi, alcuni di tradizione recente altri di origine più antica: dalle convenzioni relative alle buone maniere a tavola alle norme circa l’educazione dei figli e all’allora attualissima precettistica sul vivere a corte e sulle maniere del cortigiano. Compilando il suo manuale sul comportamento, l’autore memorizzò e fece tesoro di testi sia dell’antichità (come il De officiis del suo Cicerone) sia della riflessione umanistica e rinascimentale (da Erasmo a Antonio de Guevara e a Castiglione), intarsiando fra loro, dunque, reminiscenze di lettura di varia provenienza entro l’originale cornice narrativa degli insegnamenti domestici immaginati come impartiti da un anziano a un giovinetto.

The birth of galateo

The contribution aims to highlight the stratification in the writing of the famous little treatise by Giovanni Della Casa of different cultural strands, some of recent tradition others of more ancient origin: from the conventions relating to good table manners to the rules regarding the education of children and to the then very current precepts on living at court and on the manners of the courtier. Compiling his manual on behavior, the author memorized and treasured texts both from antiquity (such as the De officiis of Cicero) and from humanistic and Renaissance reflections (from Erasmus to Antonio de Guevara and Castiglione), thus inlaying reminiscences of reading from various sources within the original narrative frame of domestic teachings imagined as imparted by an old man to a young boy.
