«Pellicani danteschi». Paradiso XXV, Inferno XXXIII, Purgatorio XXIII

Richiamato il contesto figurale entro cui si collocano le presenze animali nei canti del cosiddetto “Esame” di Dante sulle virtù teologali, il saggio ripercorre inizialmente la diffusa tradizione del pellicano sacro, emblema cristico, nella cultura medievale. Del pellicano-cristo studia e ricostruisce la centralità nella struttura simbolica della Commedia, dove pure figura evocato una sola volta, in Paradiso XXV 113. Successivamente ne mette in luce le allusioni parodiche rinvenibili in altri passi del poema: Inferno XXXIII (Ugolino) e Purgatorio XXIII (i golosi della sesta cornice e l’esempio di Maria di Eleàzaro, quest’ultimo letto sia in riferimento all’altro esempio di gola punita che lo precede, quello di Erisittone, tratto dalle Metamorfosi ovidiane, sia alla riduzione latina del Bellum Iudaicum di Giuseppe Flavio nota sotto il nome dello Pseudo-Egesippo).

Dantesque Pelicans. Paradiso XXV, Inferno XXXIII, Purgatorio XXIII

After recalling the figurative context in which animals are placed within the cantos of the so-called Dante’s “examination” of the theological virtues, the essay initially traces the widespread tradition of the sacred Pelican, a Christic emblem, in medieval culture. It studies and reconstructs the centrality of the Pelican-Christ in the symbolic structure of the Comedy, where this figure is evoked only once, in Paradiso XXV 113. The study then highlights the parodic allusions found in other passages of the poem: Inferno XXXIII (Ugolino) and Purgatorio XXIII (the gluttons of the sixth frame and the example of Maria di Eleàzaro, this last one analyzed in reference both to the other example of the punished glutton that precedes it, that of Erisittone, taken from the Ovidian Metamorphoses, and to the Latin reduction of the Flavius Josephus’ Bellum Iudaicum, known under the name of the Pseudo-Hegesippus).
