I silenzi di Metastasio: da Roma a Vienna

Lo studio esamina le lettere inviate da Metastasio ai corrispondenti romani riguardanti le vicende teatrali e culturali capitoline del biennio 1728-1730. I rapporti intrattenuti dal poeta-drammaturgo con i circoli accademici prima della partenza per Vienna e la partecipazione ai riti arcadici – è già in atto da parte degli Arcadi romani la prima costruzione del mito di Metastasio, che verrà rielaborato nel 1782, l’anno delle celebrazioni in morte – sono aspetti presi in considerazione e verificati su corrispondenze più tarde. In tale contesto emerge la particolare cifra intellettuale del librettista, che si manifesta nell’attenzione ai temi delle leggi e dell’esercizio della giustizia. Si ricostruisce così la linea che conduce all’ultimo periodo viennese e ai rari ma incisivi giudizi del poeta cesareo sulla durata della lezione di Gravina e sull’attività della seconda Arcadia romana.

The Silences of Metastasio: from Rome to Vienna

This study examines the letters sent by Metastasio to his Roman correspondents regarding the Capitoline theatrical and cultural events in the two-year period between 1728 and 1730. The aspects taken into consideration, and verified on the basis of later correspondence, are the relations of the poet-dramatist with the academic circles before his departure for Vienna and his participation in the Arcadian rituals. At the time, the Roman Arcadians were already engaged in the construction of the myth of Metastasio, re-elaborated in 1782, a year marked by the celebration for his death. From this context, and in particular from his interest in the law and in the exercise of justice, emerges the intellectual stature of the librettist. It is thus possible to reconstruct the line leading to the last Viennese period and his rare but incisive judgements on the persistence of Gravina’s example and the activity of the second Roman Arcadia.
