L’incoronazione di Corilla Olimpica e l’improvvisazione in Arcadia nel Settecento

Il 31 agosto del 1776, l’improvvisatrice Maria Maddalena Morelli (Corilla Olimpica in Arcadia) fu incoronata con l’alloro poetico in Campidoglio. Il saggio riprende il filo degli studi che hanno visto nell’evento un episodio determinante nella ricerca di nuovi valori estetici e culturali nella cosiddetta “seconda Arcadia”. La trattazione è focalizzata sul rapporto tra improvvisazione e incoronazione poetica, e sulla definizione e la ricezione della poesia estemporanea nell’Arcadia settecentesca. Nei testi che documentano le celebrazioni di Corilla in Arcadia e in Campidoglio, e nelle testimonianze che descrivono le sue improvvisazioni, una generazione di accademici si propone come osservatorio della creazione poetica, considerata alla luce dei fattori (estro, entusiasmo, sensibilità) valorizzati e discussi in quei decenni in ambito italiano ed europeo.

The Coronation of Corilla Olimpica and Improvisation in Arcadia in the Eighteenth Century

The improvvisatrice and extemporaneous poetess Maria Maddalena Morelli (Corilla Olimpica in the Arcadian Academy) was crowned poet laureate in the Campidoglio on 31 August 1776. This essay takes up the thread of studies that have seen this event as a milestone in the quest for new aesthetic and cultural values by what was known as the “Seconda Arcadia”. The approach focuses on the relation between improvisation and the poetic laurels and on the definition and reception of extempore poetry in the 18th-century Arcadian Academy. In the texts documenting Corilla’s celebrations in Arcadia and in Campidoglio, and in the accounts describing her improvisations, a generation of academicians put themselves forward as observers of poetic creation, considered in the light of factors that were deemed important and debated at the time in Italy and the rest of Europe (including inspiration, enthusiasm and sensitivity).
